Important
information about accessing the fair park around
the ongoing road construction:
As you
may have noticed, North Temple in the area of the Utah
State Fair Park has been torn up recently due to TRAX
construction and this complicates access to the Fair
Park.
You cannot
get to 1000 west from North Temple!
Here
are some alternative routes:
- If you are arriving via I-15, exit on 600 North, go west
on 600 North to 1000 West, then south on 1000 West to the
Fairpark entrance.
- If you are on North Temple, turn North onto 900 West
(from North Temple) and then west on 200 North: The
intersection at 900 North and North Temple permits either
east-bound or west-bound drivers to turn north.
- If you are coming from I-215, take the usual Redwood Road
exit, but keep going north on Redwood Road instead of turning
on North Temple. Turn east on 500 North (the next
traffic signal), go to 1000 W and head south to the
Fairpark entrance.
Important
notice to sellers about Utah Sales Tax - Please Read!!!
When is it?
- Saturday, February 25, 2011,
beginning at 8:00 AM.
Where will the swap
meet be this year?
- At the Utah State Fairpark.
This is located along the north side of North Temple at about
10th West. The festivities will be in the Zion building
- the same building as last year - and the year before
that , and the year before that.... The Zion
building is located next to Gate B (see map) in
building 34. If you have any doubt, just follow the
crowd.

The Utah State
Fairgrounds are big! Where do we go?
- The entrance is through Gate 1
(shown in the picture at the top of the page.) This gate
is about 500 feet north of North Temple on 10th west and is
the main entrance to the fairgrounds. There is ample
parking to the north of the building after you go through the
gate. Parking and access near the building itself
is limited, so please leave that parking for those who
need to unload/load their stuff, as well as those who need
special access.
Where do we park?
- Again, please park ONLY
in the main parking lot to the north of the Zion building.
- If you park on the south or west
side of the building and do not need "special" access (i.e.
actively loading/unloading stuff, or have a "Handicapped
Parking" permit) you will be asked to move to the main parking
lot.
- These requests are being made
to assure compliance with fire regulations.
Which building
will it be in?
- The 2012 swapmeet will be in the
Zion Building - the same building as last year - and several
years before that! The Zion building is next to Gate B -
building 34 (refer to map.)
The
main
entrance
to
the
Zion
building
is on the West side (See the picture below.)
What is this
swapmeet about?
- The swapmeet is an annual event
held by the Utah VHF Society where the members of the amateur
community gather together and meet, swap/sell/trade stories
and lies, equipment, and junque. It is also at this
meeting that the UVHFS officers are chosen and elected and
important matters of policy discussed/voted upon.
What sort of junque
will be there/should I bring?
- As you would expect, the emphasis
of the swapmeet is on Amateur Radio - so if all you bring are
a bunch of Vacuum Cleaners and the warped head from a '73
Buick, you will look out of place!
Generally, anything ham radio-related will be fine, as are
electronic and computer-related items, generally.

Building on the west side.
Do not park on this, the west side, or the south side of
the building unless you are loading/unloading gear or need
special access!

What about
admission?
- Admission is FREE
for current UVHFS members
- $5.00 for non member adults
- $2.00 for non members 12
years old and under.
Your membership may
have already expired by the time of the swapmeet - see below
for info on how to renew!
Remember, for just a few bucks more than the
admission, you can get UVHFS membership which, in addition to
getting that nifty VHF Society booklet, will give you that
warm feeling of helping support many repeaters in Utah!
What's
this
"tax
thing"
about?
If you have been to any swapmeet in Utah recently (or
most other states, for that matter) to sell anything you'll
notice that forms are usually provided so that the state folks can
get their share.
Fortunately, the Utah VHF Society has obtained an official
ruling from the Utah State Tax commission. In brief, it says
this:
- If you are an INDIVIDUAL
selling a few items that you own and do not do so routinely,
there is no need to collect sales tax at the event. Of
course, you should report it on your individual tax form -
something that we should all be doing when we sell things,
anyway...
- If you are a group, business,
vendor or someone who routinely sells items at similar events,
then you are required
to collect tax on your sales and do your filings in the manner
normal to your mode of business.
In other words, the Utah VHF Society will
not be collecting any information from the sellers
this year.
Will there be
tables/spaces for my stuff?
- It is likely (but not
guaranteed) that there will be several dozen 8-foot
tables available. For a "swap space" with a
table, the charge will be $5.00. If you had planned to
bring your own table (that is, you just want an 8 foot long
floor space) the charge will be $3.00. This charge is in
addition to any admission fee.
How to renew your UVHFS membership by PayPal
or mail - if you do it far enough in advance before the
swapmeet:
UVHFS membership expires at the first
of the year, so unless you have renewed already (or have paid
for several years in advance) your membership will
have expired by the time the swapmeet happens.

layout of a portion of the fairgrounds. The Zion
building is #34, next to "Gate B." Just

you print it, make sure you do so in landscape
mode.)
No-one wants to wait in line at the
swapmeet waiting to renew their UVHFS membership! There
are several easy steps to renewing your UVHFS membership prior
to a swapmeet -
- Renew via PayPal for 2 or more
years - here's how.
- Write a check (or money order) for
$12.00 to the Utah VHF Society (UVHFS) for a year's dues and
mail it in - here are the details.
- For your support of the VHF
Society, you get not only the satisfaction of supporting many
of those repeaters that you talk on, but you get a handy Utah
Repeater and UVHFS member directory, too!
